Onboard Training Day (Youth) – Alongside
Due to berthing issues, it is currently not possible to book on the Alongside Training Days on Saturday 10th June and Saturday 14th October 2017 that was previously scheduled. Places may still be booked on the Heritage Adventure Training Day at Sea on Sunday 18th June 2017. Click here for more details. If however there is interest in possibly bringing groups to sea on other Shieldhall sailing date, please contact the Ticket Manager on 0844 357 2329 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
About the course
Each day will start at 10.00 on the boat deck for the Captain’s welcome and safety and organisational briefs. Thereafter within the day there will be six instructional sessions (three before and three after a lunch break of 45 minutes). Each session will be of approx 40 minutes duration with 5 minutes allowed for change-over and will provide theoretical or practical training for groups of up to eight. The level of instruction will be adjusted dependent upon the age and experience of the group. The six subjects to be covered on this training day could be:
|Launch and recovery of rescue RIB, running/care of o/b engines and steer a Fig.8 course.||Berthing hawsers, heaving a line, coiling ropes, flaking down, may-be a “monkey’s fist”.||On Bridge - The duties of the O.O.W. How the ship is navigated, compass, radar, signals, radio, etc.||Saloon – chartwork, Mercators projection, latitude and longitude, compass rose, laying off a course, etc.||Fire fighting – fire triangle, different extinguishers, B.A. gear, running out hoses, etc.||Instructional tour of the ship’s machinery spaces incl., boiler and engine rooms.|
The subject matter covered by these sessions or the content thereof could possibly change dependent upon operational factors and / or availability of instructors although this is thought unlikely. The day is planned to finish at 16.00 or shortly thereafter.
Places on these training days are strictly limited but in the event of over subscription or there being significant evidence of an on-going demand then further training days may be offered at which it is possible that other different aspects of seamanship / training might be covered.
We look forward to welcoming you onboard and providing a full and exciting day for your young people.
- The cost to take part in this exciting training venture is just £20.00 / head per participant.
- There is no charge for accompanying leaders or adult helpers who may like to sit in or be involved with the various training sessions.
- Discount on group numbers are applicable.
Please contact Richard Jarvis who is our Youth Training Coordinator. He can be contacted by emailing email@example.com
We regret that we are unable to provide lunch so all participants must bring their own. A light refreshment bar will be open for the sale of hot and cold drinks, biscuits, crisps, chocolate bars, etc., and it also planned that the ship’s shop will be open.
We reasonably expect that all groups will ensure a leader to young participant ratio of 1:6 although some variation may be necessary / acceptable dependent upon the age of the group members.
What to Wear/ Bring on the day
Please be mindful that some activities will be on the open deck / on the water and that in the event of inclement weather, participants will also need to have good wet weather gear.
