Fastnet Race & trip to the Needles - Sailing from Southampton

Saturday 3rd August 2019, 09:30 - 18:00

Cruise to watch the start of the 2019 Fastnet Race. RORC expects a fantastic fleet to attend one of the world’s great ocean races! After witnessing the departure of the multihulls and IRC 2, IRC 1 and IRC Z & VO65 classes from Cowes, we will continue westwards to view The Needles, one of the most photographed and iconic coastal locations in the UK. On your return pass the departing cruise ships Britannia and Arcadia -  always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

Dear Shieldhall Ticket Holder

We are looking forward to welcoming you aboard SS Shieldhall on Saturday 3 August for our ‘Trip to view the Fastnet Race and the Needles’ sailing, between 9.30am – 6pm. Shieldhall will depart from Berth 36, The Grain Terminal, in the Eastern Docks, Southampton, SO14 3GG. Please enter via Dock Gate 4. Boarding for the cruise may take place one hour before departure, ie. from 8.30am. We request passengers be on board no later than 9.15am, as the ship will look to leave promptly at 9:30am.  Please allow yourself plenty of time to reach Southampton, which will be busier than usual with cruise ships departing from the berths.

Limited courtesy parking will be available close to the ship – please check the following site for up-to-date information before you travel http://www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk/find_us

Look out for Shieldhall parking signs and Shieldhall volunteers when you enter Dock Gate 4. It is possible to drop off passengers who have difficulty in walking close to the ship, but cars must be returned to the Car Park afterwards. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN ANY OF THE SHORT STAY CAR PARKS UNLESS YOU PAY TO DO SO.  THOSE PARKING IN A SHORT STAY CAR PARK AND NOT PAYING WILL INCUR A PARKING FINE.

Please bring your ticket for check-in at the gangway with the Purser (you will have received this immediately following your booking).

Once on board, tea, coffee, soft drinks, wine and a range of bottled beers / real ale (including Flack Manor Double-Drop) may be purchased. Hot food, including bacon baps, homemade vegetable soup and quiche, plus cakes (including delicious Caymana Rum Cakes!), New Forest Ice Cream and a range of crisps and confectionery will also be available. You are welcome to bring picnics on board (no alcohol) but please note that use of the Saloon for dining is only for guests who purchase food from the Galley. The Shieldhall Gift Shop will be open with a new line of souvenirs. The Engine Room, Boiler Room and Bridge will all be open for inspection once underway.

During your cruise we will pass close to the departing cruise ships Arcadia and Britannia. Expect much tooting of whistles and sounding of sirens as the ships acknowledge one another in time-honoured fashion!

Our return to port time is indicative only and whilst we are unlikely to vary much from the times shown, circumstances may mean we have to return slightly earlier or later at the request of the Harbour Master.

Tickets remain available for this cruise and also Shieldhall's sailing on Sunday 4 August, which is a Solent Cruise to see the departure of 5 cruise ships between 3pm – 6pm. Bookings may be made online at www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk/bookings

If for any reason you need to contact Shieldhall on the day of the cruise, please contact 07769 114271. Please note this phone will be manned from 7.30am only and should only be used for emergency calls relating to the Fastnet Race cruise.
