Shieldhall stage Aviation History and Fastnet Race Cruises
Southampton Water has a wonderful aviation history and there is a great opportunity to find out more about this when Shieldhall cruises down Southampton Water on Sat 15 August between 4pm and 7pm (Adults £26; children £10). Local author Colin van Geffen and Shieldhall's retired 747 pilot John Cater will give a guest commentary, highlighting the importance played by Hythe and Calshot with the construction of seaplanes and flying boats; the role played by the spitfires of Woolston during World War II, and the famous aviation names associated with Southampton Water including T E Shaw and American aviator Amelia Earhart. On the return up Southampton Water we will pass four cruise ships departing, with much tooting of whistles and sounding of sirens! The following day Sunday 16 August Shieldhall will sail to Cowes (10.30am - 4pm) and then westwards towards Hurst, manouevering into a great position to watch the ships depart in the Fastnet Race (Adults £42, children £10). The RORC expects another fantastic fleet of 340 boats for the 90th anniversary of the Race, and Shieldhall offers an excellent photographic platform. On both cruises, passengers can gain access to Shieldhall's Engine and Boiler Rooms, meet the Captain and team on the Bridge, and relax with a range of refreshments in the Saloon. Departures for both trips will take place from Berth 48, Dock Gate 4, Eastern Docks, Southampton. For tickets, visit www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk or call 0844 357 2329.
A few tickets remain for the next excursions including one-way journey to Poole on Monday 17 August; the Friday of the Bournemouth Air Show and the return journey from Poole to Southampton on Monday 24 August. Please note that tickets for the Cowes Week Fireworks Cruise and Bournemouth Air Festival Cruises on Sat 22 and Sun 23 August have sold out!
