Portsmouth will be the focal point of the UK commemorations for D-Day 75. There will be a host of events taking place from 5th to 9th June, including the UK’s national event on 5th June.

The day will begin with a major national commemorative event on Southsea Common, including a flypast of 26 RAF aircraft – including Spitfire.

Later that afternoon there will be a flying display above Southsea Common by the Red Arrows.

The evening commemorations will see MV Boudicca depart Portsmouth with 300 D-Day veterans on board for a trip to Normandy. The ship, specially chartered by the Royal British Legion, will be escorted by a Royal Navy vessel to represent the famous crossings that took place 75 years ago. Other naval vessels are expected to gather in the Solent during the day.

Whilst exact timings of the above events appear still to be confirmed, Shieldhall is considering staging a cruise that will see her positioned to view the spectacle. The trip would likely be an all-day affair, with a morning departure from Berth 48 Southampton and a return in early evening. (Indicative costs would be - as with other 2019 Shieldhall all-day sailings - £52 adults, £10 child; £114 family ticket 2 adults / 2 children).

As this would be a late addition to our published 2019 programme, we are seeking expressions of interest in sailing. A board meeting is being held on Friday 10 May, so we kindly ask that replies are forwarded by Thursday 9 May, by 6pm. Please complete the Google form below. If there is sufficient interest - and we believe there will be - and crew and pilots can be found, we will publish the sailing and make contact to confirm timings, costs and joining details.

Thanks for your continued support of Shieldhall.
