'In the Footsteps of The Spitfire'. Spend a day in Southampton - on land and sea - exploring the maritime city's connections with the iconic Spitfire. Visit Solent Sky Museum and hear about the Spitfire's designer A J Mitchell and the history of the world’s greatest fighting aircraft; take a guided walk with a Southampton Guide through Woolston on the opposite bank of the River Itchen, once home to the Supermarine Spitfire Factory, and a primary target for the bombing raids of the Second World War, before boarding the SS Shieldhall for a cruise along Southampton Water. The Shieldhall is the country's oldest passenger-cargo steamship. Your cruise will pass down Southampton Water towards Calshot, home to the Schneider Air Trophy Races of the 1920s. You are welcome to visit the Engine Room and Boiler Room on Shieldhall and also meet the Captain on the Bridge!.
* (If groups would like to book a Tour Manager to accompany them throughout the day, this can be made available at a cost of £165).
Refreshments: Available at extra cost in Southampton or on SS Shieldhall
Guided tour of Woolston lasts approx. 1 1/2 hours (included in price).
Solent Sky Museum is open from 10am daily. We would recommend the day commencing with a visit to Solent Sky Museum, followed by the guided tour of Woolston, though these can be followed in any order. The day would finish with the SS Shieldhall Cruise.
