Head to the Solent Cruise – celebrating (over!) 200 years of Steam in the Solent

Sunday 18th July 14:30 - 18:00
Sailing from Southampton
Adults £36.50, Children £13.00, Family £86.00

Sunday 18th July 2021 , 14:30 18:00

With recent Government announcements Shieldhall is pleased to re-confirm its 2021 sailing programme. All sailings will take place under the industry ‘Good to Go’ marque for COVID compliance, which is being worked to by Shieldhall volunteers during our closed season. Sailings will take place under Governmental advice. If any sailings are cancelled (through either COVID concerns or by the Captain – such as with extremely windy weather) then ticket holders will be given a number of options. These include exchanging tickets for a later season sailing; holding tickets for the following years sailing season or requesting a refund. We look forward to welcoming you on board this summer!

24 July 1820 saw the introduction of the first steam packet between Southampton and the Isle of Wight when The Prince of Cobourg began the first of her three-times daily voyages on Southampton Water. One year on (!) from this notable anniversary, join us on the Shieldhall with displays and entertainment for the occasion! We will welcome guests The Selsea Shantymen, whilst colour and spectacle will be provided by local Steampunk groups.

See the departing cruise ships (including, subject to confirmation, P&Os Britannia) on Shieldhall’s return to berth, always the cue to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

UPDATE! As Shieldhall leaves her berth 110 she will be joined by another steamship and member of the national historic fleet – the Dunkirk Little Ship, Steam Tug Challenge. Together, the two steamships will sound their respective whistles and provide a great photo opportunity as they mark the continuing tradition of steamships on Southampton Water.

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; listen to an informed commentary on the sights and sounds of the Solent; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board!
