Summary of the Executive Committee Meeting held on 6th Dec 2019
The Treasurer reported that subject to completion of the accounts and audit, the combined contribution of the Trading Co. and Catering Co. to SSPL is likely to be £55-60k. A significant legacy payment has also been received.
Early tickets sales for 2020 were very good with approx. £7000 worth of tickets already sold. The recent use of the ship for a BBC Breakfast broadcast and a separate Labour Party election event had been very successful and attracted a lot of traffic to our website. The Chairman thanked all those who were involved in hosting these events onboard.
The Drydocking Superintendent presented the draft Tendering Specification for the Drydocking which is provisionally planned for April 2020. Enquiries seeking tenders will be sent out in January 2020. The intention is also that some work will be carried out locally if prices are competitive. The scope of the Drydocking Specification and tendering approach was endorsed and an internal budget set with contingency.
It was noted that an email had been received from MCA on 25 Nov 2019 rejecting our appeal against their decision to require annual drydocking from 2020. Planning must therefore proceed on this basis, but it is intended to raise the matter again with the MCA at a senior level.
A progress report was presented on the Heritage Fund – Resilience Project. A report ‘Our Organisation – the Way Forward?’ prepared with consultancy advice from a local accountant who is experienced in working with charity organisations was also presented. This reviewed options to change the organisation to incorporate a Registered Charity in order to benefit from potential funding opportunities. The ECM endorsed the proposal that, subject to approval at the AGM, a Registered Charity be set up (provisionally to be called the Steamship Shieldhall Trust) and requested that the project team and others as required continue to develop further definition on how this will be implemented and the impact on the current organisation.
The Membership Secretary presented an update on membership with current total at 772 which is a bit lower than in recent years. 85 new members joined in the current year to date which is significantly higher than recent years although 94 members have also been removed for non-payment of subscriptions. Approx. 2/3 of members pay by standing order.
The date of the AGM was approved as 5th April 2020. The Chairman has indicated that he will stand down as Chairman at the AGM and it is the intention of the ECM that Capt John Rose be appointed as Chairman.
