Steamship Shieldhall is marking 30 years of preservation ‘at sea’ with a sailing to Poole on Bank Holiday Monday, 30 August. Shieldhall first sailed with guests under the management of the Solent Steam Packet Charity in the summer of 1991, and we’ll be marking the occasion with the help of our in-house jazz band, The Shieldhall Stompers! A favourite cruise for visitors and crew, Shieldhall will say hello to the cruise ships in Southampton Docks, before passing down Southampton Water, into the western Solent past Hurst Castle and The Needles, before steaming past Hengistbury Head and The Old Harry Rocks. Shieldhall will then enter Poole Harbour, seeing Sandbanks and Brownsea Island at close quarters.

New hands-on engine room opportunities in Poole!

Open Days Alongside Poole Quay, 10:00 – 16:00 DAILY

Shieldhall will be open for alongside visits in Poole between 10am – 4pm on Tues 31 August and Weds 1 and Thurs 2 September, for donations of £4 adults and £1 children.

As part of your visit, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine, available visit on your visit.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Log Book whilst looking around the ship, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

For the first time, we are inviting guests to go one step further and manoeuvre one of our main engines under steam just as if they were out at sea! Respond to the telegraph orders from the bridge and set the engine running ahead or astern as required. One of our experienced engineers will guide you every step of the way. You will be in control of an 800 hp triple expansion steam engine!

What’s included in the 10 minutes hands-on experience?

Firstly, the bridge will ring down telegraph orders and you will be shown how to respond and acknowledge the order by our friendly volunteers. Once you have received the engine order, you will operate our engine controls to carry out the command. You will be in control of our original 800hp triple expansion steam engine! Due to the controls being quite heavy this is “grown ups” experience only. We can’t let the kids have all the fun can we? This unique opportunity is £25 (including the entrance donation)

All monies raised will assist Shieldhall as she plans ahead to her Dry Docking in spring 2022.

Bournemouth Air Festival – last tickets remaining for Friday 3 September

Whilst tickets for our sailings to the Bournemouth Air Festival on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September have sold out, we still have some tickets remaining for our Friday 3 September Air Festival sailing, between 10am – 7pm. The Air Festival – not staged in 2020 – is promising to come back with a full line-up of aircraft, including displays from the Red Arrows every day. The Shieldhall is a smooth and steady ship, and provides the perfect platform and photographic opportunity to enjoy the spectacular Festival sights and sounds!
